Laker Values

The sustainability of our family-like culture is at the very core of Lakeside’s success and longevity. To better quantify what it means to be a ‘Laker’, we established a committee of employees to develop a Values Statement that would be truly reflective of our organization and the individuals that comprise it. It hangs as a framed document in all our offices and is considered the guiding principles of Laker Behaviour.

Lakeside’s Value Statement

Act with Character: We are accountable for our actions and results. Conducting ourselves with a high degree of integrity and ethical standards is critical to our success. We are entrepreneurial and look for opportunities to grow and serve our customers better. We take pride in what we do.

Be a Team Player: We are dedicated to building and maintaining relationships with each other. Our internal customers are as important as our external customers. We respect our colleagues and consistently act in an open and professional manner.

Continually Improve: We do what is right and we do what it takes. We build on good ideas and learn from experiences constantly challenging ourselves to be better. Our standards are high and we drive to exceed expectations.

It is the standard in which our employees hold themselves to and is evident in everything they do. Our Laker behaviour, focuses on ethics, professionalism and respect, and uses our Value Statement as its foundation.

Career Development

At Lakeside, we believe Career Development is a continuous process of formal and informal initiatives and programs designed to help progress an employee towards their professional aspirations. We provide the opportunities for employees to learn, grow, and develop the skills and competencies necessary for optimal performance in their roles to meet business and personal objectives.

We seek individuals who are engaged, capable and committed to continuous improvement. We encourage each employee to take an active role in driving their career development at Lakeside. To facilitate necessary learning and development, Lakeside leverages several resources:

• an online career development tool for formal discussions
• frequent one-on-one meetings with direct reporting manager
• role specific, structured training programs with role enrichment opportunities
• access to senior leadership and job-shadowing opportunities
• lateral position mobility for increased organizational awareness
• paid training courses as required

These tools allow employees to regularly self-assess where they are in their career, how they would like to progress their career and then develop an appropriate career roadmap with their manager to achieve their established goals.

Health & Wellness at Lakeside

Lakeside has always taken a vested interested in improving the overall health and wellbeing of its employees. Since 2010, we have amplified our focus on this topic with the development of creative, engaging and uniquely structured wellness programs. Each year, Lakeside’s Wellness Committee develops a theme and plans monthly activities around the three pillars of health: Active Living, Healthy Eating and Mental Wellness. The program features a series of activities that appeal to all the different demographics of our employee population and we often have over 80% participation in the program as whole.

Some activities included:

  • Annual Ball Hockey Tournament
  • Annual Soccer Tournament
  • Learning to create a garden
  • June focuses on Women’s Health
  • November focuses on Men’s Health with a connection to Movember
  • Four week boot camp and introduction to dance lessons
  • Smoothie making competition to get to know the Wellness Committee
  • 30 Day Yoga Challenge
  • 30 Days of Gratitude Challenge
  • 100 Days of Happiness Challenge
  • Running Groups
  • Charity event participation: Oasis Zoo Run, Ride for Heart, Mississauga Marathon, Winnipeg Marathon, MS Bike Tour
  • Arts n’ Crafts

In addition to the annual program, every few years, Lakeside hosts a six month long Total Health Challenge and has seen significant results! In 2010, the 94 participants had a total weight loss of 803 pounds and 374 inches, as well as overall decreases to body fat, cholesterol, blood pressure and glucose. In 2015, another 680 pounds and 280 inches were lost by (an already healthier) group of 165 participants!

The redesign of our new Head Office Facility in Mississauga also took Wellness into consideration. Our Hogan Drive facility includes a dedicated Laker Wellness Centre, a standing desk, a treadmill walking station, and a bright, open concept design with lots of natural lighting.

In 2015, Lakeside was selected as one of three finalists in the Benefit Canada’s Workplace Benefits Awards for Wellness Programs under 1000 employees

All new hires receive a Welcome email ahead of their first day, which will provide all the details needed to have a productive first day. Upon arrival, you’ll receive a personal tour of the building, a welcome package with essential company and position specific details, and formal introductions to your team. You will also be taken out to have lunch with your manager!

Co-op Program

Lakeside Process Controls Ltd. is committed to working with Universities and Colleges to support Cooperative and Internship programs. On a continuous cycle, we have up to ten (10) students from various programs engaged in 4 to 16 month internship/co-op opportunities within Lakeside’s various locations. We regularly hire interns in:
• Engineering – Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical or Mechatronics
• Information Technology
• Logistics
• Office Administration
• Human Resources

During this time, students get the opportunity to immerse themselves into a professional work environment and gain valuable insight into their field. The internship/co-op program allows Lakeside to challenge the students technically as well as culturally, over a finite period of time. We often see students return to Lakeside as full-time employees.

“I had an excellent experience during my 12 months as an Application Engineering Intern at Lakeside. The company culture is something truly special – the employees create a friendly and fun atmosphere while maintaining professionalism and commitment to their customers.

The training interns receive is detailed and thorough. Before long, you are made to be a very important part of the team. The AE intern, just like a full-time AE, serves as a vital point of contact with a great deal of involvement in outside customer interactions and with internal business execution activities. There is something very rewarding and fulfilling in knowing that you are a valuable resource, not only to the company but also to a great number of customers that Lakeside serves.

For an engineering student that is up for a challenge and is ready to take advantage of a great opportunity for personal and professional development, I strongly recommend Lakeside”- Daniel Muirhead, McMaster University

If you are interested in joining our team as an intern, watch for recruitment ads on your College or University job boards. You can also touch base with our HR Team to find out more about upcoming opportunities. Email us at: hr@lakesidecontrols.com.
