Infrared imaging creates a visual representation of apparent temperatures of scanned or surveyed objects.

Infrared imaging creates a visual representation of apparent temperatures of scanned or surveyed objects.

These differences in apparent temperatures can be used to determine the overall condition or “health” of an object. As with any “tool” it’s important to understand both its potential use and limitations regarding the information or data they provide.

Infrared Thermography is a powerful tool commonly used in the Predictive Maintenance or Condition Based Monitoring world and is often the first choice used in electrical systems to determine overall health and “readiness” of equipment. Through yearly “Surveys” or more frequent “Scans” identifying potential and sometimes dangerous situations early can be the difference in the systems ability to preform as expected.
While IR is often the first choice for electrical system health it is also used in mechanical applications as well, these include but are not limited to Steam Trap Audits, Conveyor Belt bearings, Gearboxes, Belts, Motor Bodies, Couplings.

While its true we need to understand both the potential and limitations of Infrared Thermography data we do understand that this data once applied to context should help provide an overall status of the object or equipment health.
To help assist in developing the context to IR data, proper trending and review of data is key, that’s why frequency of scans, correct reporting, and analysis of data and data review is critical in todays IR world.

Today Lakeside can capture and review data from both “Boots on the ground” or an IR Technician capturing data at an instance in time to online continuous monitoring systems that report in Real Time and indicate the possible problem as it develops saving both repair costs and downtime before they arise.
